Are you getting ready to downsize and move into a smaller house? If so, the moving process may be more difficult than you think. You do not want to end up at your new place with more items than you have room for. Here are some tips that will help ensure everything goes smoothly.

Plan Your Room Layouts

Everything you own is not going to fit into your new house. It will help to take measurements of each room in your new house and plan how you will layout your furniture. This will let you know where each item will go in your new house, and you can label items accordingly for your movers. Even though the layout of the house will be different, unpacking will be easier when everything is in the right room at your new place.

Plan to Use Self Storage

For those items that will not fit in your new place, you should plan to take those items to a local self storage facility. Label them separately so that your movers pack them last, and then have the movers take the items directly to the storage unit on the way to your new house. Since those room layouts helped you determine what will not fit, you'll save yourself the hassle of packing those items up and bringing them to a storage unit later.

Be sure to notify your movers ahead of time that you plan on making a stop at a self storage facility. You may have to pay additional for the crews time and any extra miles.

Plan to Get Rid of Belongings

You want to do some sorting before your moving day to determine what is and isn't coming with you to your new house. Start sorting those items into piles of things that should be thrown away, things that are good enough to donate, and things you can sell and make some money off of. It may even be a good idea to have a garage sale before the move to limit the amount of times that you have to move the items.

Taking the items with you not only costs money to pack, but will cost money to move. Save yourself the hassle by getting rid of them at you old place.
